Sarah Hohler

Candidate in tonbridge_and_malling for Malling North.

Sarah was first elected to the County Council in May 1989 as the Conservative Member for Malling North. She is one of the longest serving councillors at KCC.

Sarah read PPE at St Hughs College, Oxford. She has taught in Accra, Ghana, worked in publishing in London and Hong Kong, and lived in New York for five years with her diplomat husband. While there she ran her own playgroup, worked as a fund raiser and also as a school librarian at Spence School. The family were then posted to Brussels where Sarah worked for the British Council, supporting teachers.

Since 1981 Sarah has lived on the family farm in Stansted, where all her four daughters went to primary school and the two younger ones went on to Tonbridge Girls Grammar School.

Sarah has held several portfolios in the KCC cabinet: Strategic Planning, Communities and Deputy Leader to Lord Sandy Bruce-Lockhart until October 2004 when she decided to follow him to the back benches for a rest.

In June 2009, Sarah became Cabinet Member for children, Families and Education and is currently Deputy Cabinet Member for Community Services. She represents the County Council on Kent Music, the Rochester Bridge Trust and Turner Contemporary. She is also a trustee of the Kent Community Foundation, and she is a member of the Tate, the Royal Academy, the National Trust and the Royal Horticultural Society.

Her interests are gardening, cooking, the farm, walking and bird watching. She now has seven grandchildren and still lives on the farm, having swapped houses with her eldest daughter who now runs it with her family.
