Sevenoaks Rural South
I was born in Giggleswick, Yorkshire but have lived in Kent all my life. On leaving school I joined the Army as a private soldier in the Royal West Kent Regiment. I was commissioned in the Royal Armoured Corps and served as a troop leader. In the Army I learned to fly and to parachute.
I joined the Stock Exchange and rose to become Chief Executive of an International Stockbroking firm. Just before retiring from the City I was headhunted to look after lottery winners on behalf of a major high street bank.
In May 1993 I was first elected to the County Council as the member for Sevenoaks South. I served as Chairman of the Superannuation Committee and as Cabinet Member for Social Care and Community Health. I became Chairman of Kent County Council on 15th May 2008. I have since been Deputy Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Specialist Children's Services and Public Health.
Currently I am District Councillor for Leigh and Chiddingstone Causeway. I am a trustee of The Abbeyfield (Kent) Society and a trustee of Rochester Cathedral. I am also an active member of the National Coastwatch Institution working with HM Coastguard, the Border Force and the RNLI.
I am married to Nella and we have three married daughters and five grandchildren.
