Deal & Walmer
My name is Derek Murphy. I want to represent you as your County Councillor because I believe Deal and Walmer residents deserve a more effective presence at County Hall.
I was born in Folkestone in 1958, and have lived in East Kent all my life.
I was educated at St Edmunds Secondary School (Dover), and attended the University of Kent gaining an MBA degree in 1997.
In 2015 after 29 years I retired from BT Plc as a Senior Manager where I worked with local and global organisations designing their telecommunications networks.
Between 1982 -1992 I was a Territorial Army Officer serving with the Royal Signals, and the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.
Moving to Walmer in 2004, I take an active interest in local politics, and have been an elected member of Walmer Council since 2007. During this period I was instrumental in the establishment of the council offices in Walmer, three successive annual rate reductions, and the building of a disabled toilet in Walmer.
In 2015 I became a Dover District Councillor. I sit on 7 committees, providing the opportunity to ensure the interests of Deal and Walmer residents are fully represented.
I am also the KCC appointed governor to the Deal Parochial Primary School, additionally I am a Trustee for the local Riding for the Disabled Association.
I am passionate about reducing bureaucratic waste ensuring that the residents of Deal and Walmer realise the best possible services from KCC.
I am also determined to see a greater uniformed police presence on our streets, and if elected will lobby our PCC to bring this about.
Education is central to my beliefs, if elected I will work to ensure that our children have access to the best available schools.
I am a cricket fan and life member of KCCC. My other interests include distance walking, Napoleonic studies, and environmental issues.
